South Pasadena is a small and independent city located in the West San Gabriel Valley, lying south of the far larger city of Pasadena. According to 2010 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 25,619 with an area of 3.44 square miles. It is known for the streets that are lined with various species of native California trees and historic California Craftsman style homes that are a popular stand in for Midwestern and Northeastern towns in motion pictures and television production.
South Pasadena has taken a stand for over 125 years to preserve its status as a distinctive community full of history. Mission west area and Fair Oaks Avenue is a part of the original U.S. Route 66. These streets are filled with wonderful unique small businesses, such as Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain, Reimagine your home and Brigante’s Italian Restaurant. The Rialto Theater, although not in business anymore, is one of the last remaining single screen cinemas in the country and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. South Pasadena also has the distinction of creating the Tournament of Roses Parade’s oldest self-built float.
The city is also known for the outstanding public schools that are repeatedly ranked among the best in California. The South Pasadena Unified School District includes three elementary schools, Monterey Hills, Arroyo Vista, and Marengo, South Pasadena Middle School, and South Pasadena High school.
